SALFO in Joint Venture with High Point Rendel and Ingerop were responsible for the Independent Supervision/ Construction Management of the Adjoining Bulgarian Infrastructure Works at Vidin–Calafat Bridge (or Danube Bridge 2). It is the second bridge on the shared section of the Danube between Romania (Calafat) and Bulgaria (Vidin), located approximately 200km North of Sofia.


The Independent Supervising Engineer's services include construction management and supervision, technical support and quality control of the construction works, according to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract.


The contract for the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure works, which was awarded to FCC Construccion, included:

  • New and upgraded rail track, linking the existing line from Sofia with the new Vidin-Calafat Bridge, with a length of 18km.
  • New Border Freight Station and refurbishment of the existing railway station in Vidin.
  • New two-lane highway section connecting the Vidin By-Pass at Novo Selo Junction to the approaches of the new bridge, with a length of 11,5km.
  • Four grade-separated junctions, each with a road over-bridge, including landscaping.
  • Four rail overpasses.
