Hellenic Railways Programme

See all projects

SALFO in Joint Venture with Parsons Group International and Transurb Technirail (subsidiary of Belgian Railways) were responsible for providing programme management services to the Hellenic Railways Organization (ERGOSE) for the implementation of its investment programme for the period 2003-2009.

The Programme's scope was to deliver a modernized railway network, which would meet passenger and freight transport demands both nationally and internationally and would increase its competitiveness against other transport systems.

The overall budget of the Investment Programme that we managed exceeded 2 billion Euros. The largest project was the upgrade of the main rail line Patras – Athens – Thessaloniki – Idomeni to an electrified high-speed corridor in compliance with the European railway interoperability requirements and with increased transport capacity, along with its connection to the principle ports of Greece as well to the Athens International Airport. The overall Program included the construction of:

  • 300 km of new double track high speed electrified line;
  • Upgrade & rehabilitation of 500 km single & double track line to double high speed electrified line;
  • More than 45 km tunnels;
  • Connection of 4 major sea ports with the rail network;
  • Over 100 over/under passes;
  • 19 new modern stations and renovation of the old ones;
  • Installation of modern ERTMS / ETCS train control systems, GSM-R radio network and other signaling, telecommanding and telecommunications systems.

Another key project was the development of the Athens suburban railway network, which, in combination with other transportation networks, namely the Athens Metro and Attiki Odos Motorway would create an integrated transportation network, connecting Piraeus port to the Athens International Airport, with expected passenger traffic of 225.000 passengers. The suburban railway network was a fast track project due to its significance for the fulfillment of the transportation needs during "Athens 2004" Olympic Games. The suburban railway of Athens concerned the construction of:

  • 16,5 km triple track electrified line;
  • 35 km double track electrified line;
  • 3,5 km double track line;
  • 15 passenger and 2 freight stations;
  • 33 underpasses;
  • Modern signaling, telecommanding and telecommunication systems.

The Consultant was also responsible for preparing ERGOSE's business plan for the period 2005-2008.
